Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had taken their leave before the rest, and Wangji was happy for the chance to have a moment to think to himself.
He wasn't so happy for the thoughts that were coming to him.
As much as he was glad that it was over, that left a terrible question for him in its wake. He had been given a cause - a reason - to stand at Wei Wuxian's side, this whole time, and now it was crumbling from his grasp. They had completed their quest. Surely now it was time to return to what their lives should have been?
He knew Wei Ying could not go back to Lotus Pier readily, but that didn't mean there weren't places for him to go. People for him to find. He wondered if maybe Wei Ying would look for his mother's master - a quest that Lan Zhan could not accompany him for. He wanted more than anything else to go with him.
But wants were not realities, and his selfish desire to stay at Wei Ying's side was just that. He could not keep their lives on hold to drag out the fantasies of his youth. Wei Ying deserved the life he had dreamed of before it had been stolen from him, before he had been forced down a righteous, but dark and lonely, path. And Wangji had responsibilities waiting for him that he had put aside. He was not free to simply wander the world as he wished.
