A BRIEF HISTORY Wei Wuxian (birth name Wei Ying) was born to two cultivators, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, who met an untimely death when the boy was only 5 years old. Wei Wuxian fended for himself for 3 years, until he was found by the Yunmeng Jiang Sect Leader Jiang Fengmian. (Wei Wuxian's father, Wei Changze, was a disciple of the Jiang, and thus has sworn fealty to Jiang Fengmian.) Wei Wuxian was then adopted and raised along Jiang Fengmian's trueborn children, Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng, despite Madame Yu Ziyuan's (Jiang Fengmian's lawful wife) displeasure. Wei Wuxian grew up to be an exceptional disciple of the sect, even excelling past Jiang Cheng's own abilities and aptitudes. Despite this, there's no resentment between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, the two considering each other as true brothers, even swearing one another to become pillars of the Jiang Sect once Jiang Cheng takes on the mantle of Sect Leader. Wei Wuxian grew up with a relatively uneventful life for a cultivator. This all changes when Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian reach the age of responsibility and are sent to the Gusu Lan Sect's seat to attend cultivation lectures. It is there that Wei Wuxian meets Lan Wangji, the Young Master of the Lan Clan; the two immediately form a contentious relationship that eventually develops into a close friendship. It's also during Wei Wuxian's stay at the Cloud Recesses that he gets involved in an ongoing plot for dominance led by the Qishan Wen Sect - and, unbeknownst to him, the beginning of his descent into demonic cultivation. SPIRIT DOLLS - By infusing paper dolls with his spirit through hand seals or blood seals, Wei Wuxian can spy and observe from limited distances. These paper dolls "die" eventually, usually within hours, if they are torn up or otherwise damaged. INTELLIGENCE - Wei Wuxian is one of the smartest characters in the show, and is equal only to Lan Wangji in terms of cultivation skills. He is well known among his peers for his intellect as much as his mischief, and is his sharp senses allow him to come to certain conclusions before others may even glimpse an idea of it. He's also easily taught, and can quickly adapt to situations, making him a dangerous opponent and a strong ally. NATURAL APTITUDES (ARCHERY, SWORDSMANSHIP, MUSIC) - Wei Wuxian is expertly trained in archery and martial arts, especially swordfighting; it has been remarked several times in the show that his prowess at wielding a sword alone is exemplary, even without his cultivation skills. He can also shoot arrows extremely accurately, even when blindfolded and without his golden core. Also, further on in the series, his musical ability is revealed to be so great that he's able to control resentful spirits and corpse puppets simply by flute.
